November 21-22nd

Dear Parents,

It is a very short week this week! I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving!

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be taking our next test. On Monday we will take our test and on Tuesday we will go over the test. It will focus mainly on Main Ideas and Key Details as well as some language concepts we have learned. There will be no spelling or reading log for this week. Students are still encouraged to read every day this week though!

Math: This week we will be continuing our Word Problems Unit. We will focus on multiple step division problems and will review estimating. We will have no math homework for the week!

Writing: This week we are finishing our opinion writing by writing about if we should eat turkeys for Thanksgiving or not. This is due on Tuesday November 22nd, the last day before Thanksgiving Break. Students will type this and put it into myaccess.com for a score. They should know how to do this. They have their username and password glued into their planner.

Science: With a substitute, the students will watch a Bill Nye the Science Guy video about Rocks and Soil. They will also review a little bit about the water cycle.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will continue to talk about recreation in Utah. We will work on our PowerPoint presentation of our favorite recreational activity in Utah. We will also study our Counties. Our first County Quiz will be on December 1st and 2nd. Quiz 2 will be December 7th and 8th. Quiz 3 will be December 13th and 14th. The final test will be on December 19th for my class and December 20th for Mrs. Ditto’s class. Answer keys for each of these quizzes and tests will be posted on my blog as well as links to help students study for them: http://mrswheatleysfourthgrade.blogspot.com/

Here are the links to this week's spelling words. There are 3 different lists for students, according to their needs. The list your child brings home each week should say at the bottom the name of the list. You can also access the words on these links as well as games for students to study with.

November 14-18th

Dear Parents,

We have been working so hard on our double-digit multiplication and our long division! I am so proud of everyone! We have been understanding both, doing well on both, and making huge improvements from where we started from! Also, I would like to do book orders from Scholastic this month. I have 1 student that has ordered a book, but I need more to make a full order. If you are interested it getting books this month through book orders, please look for the fliers coming home this week in white envelopes. There are instructions on the white envelope for how to order books online or you can send your student with the order form and a check to me. I want to order books by Monday November 28th, so please have them ordered online by then or brought back to me by then.

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be focusing on poetry. We will read poems, learn about meter, rhyme, and figurative language in poems. Our spelling is list #10 with suffixes. Students should be spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will be working on our Word Problems Unit. We will do multiplication, division, area and perimeter, and estimating word problems. In Target Time we will review long division.

Writing: This week we are continuing our opinion writing by writing about if we should eat turkeys for Thanksgiving or not. This is due on Tuesday November 22nd, the last day before Thanksgiving Break. Students will type this and put it into myaccess.com for a score. They should know how to do this. They have their username and password glued into their planner.

Science: This week in science we will work on our new vocabulary words about rocks. We will also review weathering and erosion. We have a new “rock” song that we will start learning this week about the 3 kinds of rocks. We will specifically focus on sedimentary rocks this week and discuss what they are and examples of sedimentary rocks.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be talking first about environmental issues in Utah. Then we will talk about recreation in Utah. We will begin a project where we share with a PowerPoint presentation of our favorite recreational activity in Utah.

November 7-11th

Dear Parents,

I’m so proud of how students have been picking up multiplication! The class did excellent on our multiplication test a little while ago, and for the past week during Target Time, they have been doing even better at it! Also, long division is coming along really well!

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be continuing to work identifying main ideas and writing summaries of non-fiction texts. Our spelling is list #9 with r-controlled vowels. Students should be spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will be finishing long division. We will review and do lots of practice on the algorithm in class and we will take our test on Thursday. Wednesday, students should bring home their pre-test as a study guide. Please go over this with your student to make sure they know how to do long division before our test! In Target Time we will be continuing double digit and 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication. Their homework will be reviewing division this week.

Writing: This week we are continuing our opinion writing. We will finish our Ben Franklin writing together and we will revise and type our essays. We will be putting our opinion essays in an online grading program called My Access. Students this week will learn how to do this and will be able to instantly see how they did on their essay.

Science: To start our rock unit off, we will be comparing and contrasting weathering and erosion. We will learn an erosion dance and a saying to help differentiate between the two. We will also watch a video that explains erosion more in depth. The students overall did well on their science weather tests. They will have an opportunity to do a make-up assignment at home to add points onto their score. This assignment is due by Friday, November 11th. These makeup points will only be available to those who got below a 90% on their science test.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be talking about how humans change their environment. We will also pretend to develop a city in the middle of nowhere and figure out what we would need to do to the environment to build the city. We will also study our counties in class. Students should also be practicing memorizing their counties at home.

This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Spelling #9– 20 minutes of study and list signed by parent
Lesson 4.2-P71, 4.4-P75, 4.6- P79, 4.9-P85
Study Counties and County Seats
*Math, reading, and spelling are due on Friday
