November 30th-December 4th

This week in reading we will be discussing connections between oral and visual presentations of a story. We will be reading the BFG Play and Where the Wild Things Are. Then, we will watch video clips of each and looking for connections. Our spelling will be Sort 29. Students need to do 20 points and turn them in on Friday. Students need to fill out a reading log for this week and turn it in on Monday as well. For last week, students only needed to fill in for Monday and Tuesday.

This week in writing we will be continuing our persuasive/opinion unit. We will begin a letter trying to persuade Mr. Campbell to or not to give us a Pajama Day just for the 4th grade. These will be due on Monday, December 14th when we will read them and pick 1 person to read their letter to Mr. Campbell. Students Turkey Letters were due last week so if they have not been turned in, they need to be finished at home and turned in.

This week in math we will be continuing to learn about place value. We will do some reviewing and learn how to rename numbers. This tends to be a hard concept for students. Here is an example. If I have 1,000 ones, it is the same as 100 tens, or 10 hundreds.

This week in social studies we will continue our recreation presentations. We will finish them and present them to the class. We are taking Quiz 1 for counties at the beginning of this week. My class will take Quiz 2 on Friday and Mrs. Ditto’s class will take it next Monday. Here is a copy of that quiz for you to help your students study.

Southwest Region Quiz given on December 4th and 7th.

November 23-24th

This week in reading we will be practicing our fluency. We will discuss how to read fluently by using expression, phrasing, a good rate, and reading accurately. We will also learn a little about the Pilgrims and the First Thanksgiving. Students should complete a reading log for Monday and Tuesday of this week and turn it in on the Monday after Thanksgiving (next Monday). There will be no spelling homework for this week though! Spelling will resume next week.

This week in writing we will be finishing our Turkey vs Farmer letters. They are due tomorrow, Tuesday and we will read them to the class. If students have not typed these letters and shared them with me yet, they should have brought it home tonight to finish.

This week in math we will continue our place value unit. We will learn how to read and write numbers in word form, standard form, and expanded form. We will also learn how to compare numbers.

This week in social studies we will be continuing our Recreation Project. We will continue making presentations on our chosen activities. Students should be studying their counties at home. We will be taking our first quiz on these counties when we get back from the break next week. Here is a study guide for Quiz 1.

November 16-20th

This week in reading we will be learning about 1st and 2nd hand accounts. A 1st hand account is something written/told by someone who was actually there. A 2nd hand account is by someone who was not there. This is similar to what we learned last week, but this week we will be reading non-fiction. Our spelling list this week is Sort 27. Students should turn in their 20 points of homework activities on Friday. They should also turn in another Reading Log with 100 minutes on Monday.

This week in writing we are continuing to work on our Turkey/Farmer Opinion letters. We are focusing on the organization of an opinion/persuasive essay. We will write our introduction and conclusion, edit and revise, and start typing our letter this week. This letter is due next Tuesday, November 24 and we will read them to the class on that day.

This week in math we will be finishing our basic Fractions Unit and taking our test on Wednesday. We will then begin our Place Value Unit. Students who were retaking their Long Division Test in Target Time last week will finish that in class. In Target Time this week we will be working on Word Problems. We have not given this test yet because we know that students need extra time in Target Time to review word problems before giving this test.

This week in social studies we will be learning about Recreation. We will be creating Power Points for our favorite recreation activity in Utah. These will be done in class, in partners. Students will be graded on completion of the Power Point. Students should still be studying for their county and county seat test. We will begin giving quizzes on the counties and county seats when we get back from Thanksgiving Break.

It is now Term 2. Grades will soon be posted on Skyward so far for the new term. This will include the Long Division Test. Also, our class has just received 5 classroom Chromebooks from donations on Donorschoose.org. We are so excited to have more access to Chromebooks during class! My goal is to end up with a full class set of Chromebooks as soon as we can. If you would like to learn more about this donation or to donate yourself for our next Chromebooks, please visit my page on Donorschoose.org at: http://www.donorschoose.org/we-teach/3221321. Lastly, next Tuesday we will be going to Orem High for our movie party. This is the party we earned as a school from the Cougar Crawl donation. Please help to make sure that you sign the permission slip that will be sent home this week and PLEASE make sure that your student is here on time to school next Tuesday! We will be leaving right when the PMs get here at 9:15, so make sure your student is on time.

November 9-13th

This week in reading we are learning about the point of view different fiction texts can be written in. 1st person is where the person telling the story is actually in the story and 3rd person is where someone not in the story is telling it. We will have an assessment on this concept on Friday. Our spelling is Sort 21 this week with long and short e. Students should turn in 20 points of work on Friday. They should also complete another reading log this week to turn in on Monday.

This week in writing we will be beginning our Opinion/Persuasive Unit. Our first project will be to write a letter as a Turkey or Farmer for Thanksgiving. We will give reasons why we should eat turkey or why we shouldn't eat turkey for Thanksgiving. We will read these to the class the day before Thanksgiving Break.

This week in math we will be starting our Fractions unit. This should be an easier unit that reviews the basics of fractions. We will discuss what fractions are, how to make them, and how to break them apart. We will also add fractions together and subtract them. In Target Time we will be finishing Long Division and will take our test as well. If your student is still struggling with long division, I encourage you to have them practice using the games I emailed the links for to students a couple of weeks ago. These will take students step by step through long division and will give them great practice. Also, if your student did not get an 80% or above on their Multiplication Test, this week I will let students retake it. If your student wants to/if you want your student to retake this test, they must tell me and stay in from recess sometime this week to get it done.

This week in social studies we will be discussing what we would need if we were going to develop a city. We will pretend to do so and draw pictures of our city. We will also learn about some important environmental issues in Utah. We will also continue to study our counties in class.

November 2nd-6th

This week in reading we will be discussing the differences between drama, poetry and prose. We will read examples of each and learn what makes each of them unique as well as the similarities and differences between each of them. We will take an assessment on this on Friday. Our spelling this week is Sort 20 with the oo sound. Students should turn in their 20 points on Friday. Also, students should still be turning in a Reading Log each Monday.

This week in writing we are finishing our poetry unit. We will finish learning how to write tongue twisters, couplets, quatrains, sonnets, and free verse poems. Then we will pick a few to edit, revise, and publish. We will make a class book of these. We will also be taking about figurative language this week as we learn about poetry.

This week in math we will finish our word problems unit. This tends to be a really hard unit for students, so we will not be giving the test for this unit until after we have had plenty of review time in Target Time. Please help your students at home with words problems of all different types. This week in Target Time we will be reviewing long division. We will retake our test in Target Time as well. Since this was really hard for students as well, I will not be putting in student's grades for this test until they have done the retake. Also, I have posted on my blog links to some awesome games students can use to review/practice long division on their own at home. Please help your student with long division if they are still having trouble with it!

This week in social studies we will be discussing 2 things. We will discuss factors that influence our health and safety in Utah as well as discussing how humans can change their physical environment. Also, students will be making study guides to take home to review and study for their counties test. This test will not be until December. My class will take it on December 14th and Mrs. Ditto's class on December 15th. We will spend time in class practicing and studying for this test, but students are also expected to practice at home to make sure they know where each county is and what it's county seat is.

Lastly, the end of the term is coming up. All missing assignments are due on THIS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH! Missing assignments will not be accepted after that. If there is a test that your student hasn't finished, we will take care of that in class. Other than that, students are expected to get everything else in to me by Friday. I sent home missing assignment lists on Friday of last week so students could get a head start on this over the weekend.
