September 29-October 3

This week in reading we are reading texts and figuring out what the point they are making is. Then we are figuring out what reasons and evidence they give to support their point. This is a precursor for when we begin writing our persuasive essays where we will need to have reasons and evidence to support our point. Our spelling this week is Sort 13 with VCV, VCCV doublet, and VCCV different words. Remember, students do NOT need to color their words at home. We do that in class. They just need to do the purple sheet activities at home. If you want to help your student practice their spelling words online, you can go to the link for Spelling City on my blog and go to the sort for this week, and you can have students study the words there and practice taking their spelling test.

This week in writing we are finishing our How Tos. We will be finishing editing and revising our rough drafts, and then publishing our final draft. Once we have a final draft done, we will type our paper on the Chromebooks. I'm still trying to get our blog set up so I will send and email home later in the week letting you know how to have students get on and type their paper when they are done. Again, if they don't finish everything by Thursday in class, they need to take it home for homework so they can present it in class on Friday.

This week in math we are moving on to multiplying 2 digit numbers by other 2 digit numbers. For example, 24 x 45 = ?. I will be sending home a sheet at the end of the week to help you know how to do the different strategies we are going over in class.

This week in social studies we are learning about climate and natural resources. We will talk about what they are and what we have in Utah. Also, please make sure that your student is working on their county report! These are due at the end of next week: October 9th for my class and October 10th for Miss Goldsborough's class. I have posted a couple of links on my blog to help you find the information needed for these reports.

Lastly, please help your student to remember to get their homework done, with their name on it, and remember to turn it in! This will help keep your student caught up with their work. If they have missing assignments, make sure they get them done ASAP before they become 0s after 2 weeks.

County Report

Students should have received in class a handout with information on it about what they need for their county report as well as which county they are to do. Here is a copy of the handout just in case your student has lost it! If they don't remember what county they are doing, they can ask me in class and I will remind them.

September 22-26th

This week in reading we are learning how to find the main idea and important details in a text. This will help us to summarize a text. For spelling we are doing Sort 8 which is Unusual Plurals. Please make sure that your student is getting their 20 points worth of spelling activities done each week and turned in to me! Also, please make sure that your student is filling out their reading log each week night and turning it in on Mondays.

This week in writing we are continuing to write our How Tos. If students do not have their yellow Pre-write done by the end of class tomorrow, they need to bring it home and finish it for homework. We will be working on our drafts for the rest of the week.

This week in math we are learning how to multiply large numbers. We will be multiplying up to 1 digit by 4 digits. For example: 5 x 1,735. We will be using models, pictures, and learning the standard algrothim to solve these problems. I will be stressing that we can break problems up. For example, 5 x 1,735 really means 5 x 1,000 +5 x 700 + 5 x 30 + 5 x 5. This breaks the problem up into manageable chunks.

This week in social studies we are talking about the regions of Utah and what is found in those regions.  We are also talking about how the landforms in Utah were formed over time and what caused Utah to look the way it does now. Students will also be receiving their County Reports assignments. They will be receiving a sheet that tells what is required, as well as sheets guiding them to find what they need to. They will be researching a county in Utah and putting together a poster with the information they found. Students will probably need your help to do this! They will also probably need access to a computer and or books about their county. My class's reports are due October 9th, and Miss Goldsborough's class's reports are due October 10th.

Tomorrow I will be sending home missing assignment sheets as well as emailing you progress reports for your student. Our 4th grade policy is that we accept late homework with no deduction of points until 2 weeks after the due date. After 2 weeks, missing assignments become zeros and no points will be given for them. Please help your student to get all of their missing assignments in within 2 weeks of their due date! Also, at anytime if you are wondering how your student is doing in class, you can check Skyward and see their grades.

September 15-19th

This week in reading we are continuing our practice of making inferences but this week we are focusing on non-fiction texts. We are doing Sort 4 for spelling. It is a review of rules we have learned when adding -ing to words. Again, we are still doing the purple sheet activities. If your student has lost this, you can get another copy of it on my blog.

This week in writing we are starting our explanatory writing project. This will be a "How To" assignment where students will be explaining how to do something in their paper. We will be brainstorming things that we are "expert" at in class and picking something to write about this week.

This week in math we are finishing our unit on Factors and Multiples. We will be reviewing and taking our test on this unit on Friday.

This week in social studies we are learning about the different landforms in Utah, mainly mountains, rivers, lakes, and deserts. We will also begin our study of the counties of Utah. Before Christmas Break students will need to have each of the counties in Utah memorized.

Don't forget to help your student sign up for Road to Success and help them log their days! Days need to be logged by Sunday before we print tickets for the previous week. Also, please help your student raise money for our Cougar Crawl this week! Lastly, if you are interested and willing to come in to help in our class and you did not sign up at Back to School night, please let me know! I am getting things ready for our parent helpers to help us!

September 8-12th

This week in reading we are talking about inferences. We make inferences when we put what we already know about something together with text clues, or what the book tells us, and we try and figure out what it means. We are doing Sort 3 which is another 2 groups of words adding -ing at the end. Again, students need to do 20 points worth of activities from the purple sheet this week for homework.

This week in writing we are finishing our Personal Narratives. They are due on Friday. Students are revising and editing their draft in class, then writing a final draft to be graded. If this is not completed by Thursday in class, they need to take it home and finish it for homework.

This week in math we are learning about factors and multiples. A factor is one of the numbers you multiply together in a multiplication problem. A multiple is multiple groups of a number. We will be finding factors of different numbers, learning divisibility rules, and finding multiples.

This week we will start talking about different landforms. We will talk more about maps as well as the different landforms that are here in Utah.

If you would like to order books through Scholastic Book Orders, the form either needs to be brought into class with the money by Friday, or books need to be ordered online with the code DH29Z by then as well. Also, our Road to Success reading program has now started. Tomorrow I will be sending home with the weekly envelopes instructions on how to sign up your student. If you do not have a computer at home, we can get this taken care of at school, but please allow your student if possible to do this at home so as not to take away from class time. Lastly, our Cougar Crawl is coming up. You will be receiving more information on this as well in the weekly envelope. Please help us raise money for some wonderful things for our school!

September 2nd-5th

This week in reading we are finishing talking about the Narrative (story) structure and are moving on to Non-fiction structure. We are writing summaries together using these structures. We have also started spelling. This week our sort is Sort 2. These words have VC, VCC, double, and nothing categories. V stands for vowel and C for consonant. The double means that you have to double the consonant before adding -ing and the nothing means you don't add anything before adding -ing. I have sent home a purple paper telling students what to do for their spelling homework. I will post a copy of this as well as the spelling words on my blog so you can refer to it.

This week in writing we are starting our drafts for our Personal Narratives. If students have not finished their organizer, they were supposed to take it home tonight and finish it for homework. This is basically a pre-write/notes page to help students come up with the ideas the want to include in their writing. Then we will be drafting, or writing out for the first time, our draft. After that, we will revise and edit our draft.

This week in math we are finishing our review of multiplication and division. We have finished making our flash cards, and on Friday students will bring them home so they can practice at home. We will also be taking a multiplication and a division test to assess how well students know their multiplication and division facts.

This week in social studies we are continuing learning about maps and the world. We will move on to maps of Utah and be looking at different things in Utah.

If you missed Back to School Night, please email me so I can send you any information you need. Plus,  I will be sending home the handouts I had for you in the weekly envelopes tomorrow.
Again, if you have any questions, please let me know!
