August 29th-September 2nd

Dear Parents,

We have had a great 1st week of school! We have earned so many stars and everyone has had such good behavior! We are loving our read aloud book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and we are doing so good with our independent work.

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: We are going to continue how to close read. This means that while we are reading, we are marking the text and looking closely for different things. This helps us learn as much as we can from the text. We will also go over story summaries and continue working on our DRAs. Students should now be filling out a pink reading log each weeknight for their 20 mins of reading. They should turn it in on Friday.

Math: We are continuing to learn about Place Value. We will be comparing numbers, rounding numbers, and renaming numbers. Homework will still be review to give students practice. It will be due on Friday.

Writing: We are starting our first writing unit and will be writing Personal Narratives. We will focus on coming up with our ideas and using precise words while working on our pre-write.

Science: In science we are focusing on vocabulary words that relate to the water cycle this week. We will also watch a movie about the water cycle as well as do an art project based on the water cycle.

Social Studies: This week we will continue learning about maps. We will practice identifying places by their latitude and longitude lines, finding places by their locations on maps of Utah as well as on Google Earth, and learning more about geography.

This week's homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Addition and Subtraction review - both sides
Division review - both sides
*All homework is given on Monday and due on Friday

*If you have signed up to volunteer in our class, I would love it if you could start coming in next week. If you haven't signed up but would like to volunteer, please let me know and I can find a time that works for us. If you remember signing up, but don't remember the time or day, please email me and I will look it up for you. Thanks for volunteering your time!

**Students should have brought home book orders in their weekly envelopes. If you wish to order them, the best way to do that is online. There are instructions on your envelope. If you can't order online, you can send the book order form to school with your student with a check, NO CASH PLEASE, and I will order them.

***Don't forget to come to Back to School night this Thursday, September 1st at 6:00. Students do NOT need to come to this, just you wonderful parents! This is where I will give you much more information on our class and will be a great opportunity for you to ask me any questions you have. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Thanks!
Mrs. Wheatley

August 22-26th

Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful first day of school! As a class we already earned 4 points for a party and everyone had good behavior for the day. You should have seen your student's planner today. Please make sure that you check your student's planner every day to see how they behaved in class. A Gold Star means they had an amazing day. A Silver Star means they had a good day. A Strike means they had hard time that day. Strike 1 is a warning, Strike 2 is a talk with me about their behavior, and Strike 3 is a Think Time out of our room. This will be a great way to see when your student is having great days in class and when they are struggling a bit.

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: We are taking pre-tests for spelling so I can see the needs of each student. We are also learning about how to close read, choose Just Right Books, and working on our DRAs.

Math: We are taking a Place Value pre-test and a Factors pre-test. These will also help me see the needs of your students. Then we will begin our Place Value unit.

Writing: We will begin writing with just a few practice prompts this week to get our thoughts flowing. Next week we will begin our first writing project.

Science: We will begin science on Friday and start learning about the water cycle.

Social Studies: We will begin social studies on Thursday and talk about maps.

Homework:
Read 20 Mins each day
X Final Sheet, both sides
Student Inventory
Questionnaire for Parents
* All homework is given on Monday and is due back to school on Friday

Please let me know if you have any questions. Our Back to School Night is next week, September 1st at 6:00. We will go over much more information about our class then.

Thanks so much!
