August 31-September 4th

This week in reading we are starting a couple new things. First, we are starting our Fluency practice in class. This will be the first thing we do every day when we come in to class. This means that it is very important that students are here on time, especially if they are a Track 1 student. We are also starting spelling. Students should have received a purple sheet explaining what homework is. I will also post it on my blog. Basically, students need to do 20 points worth of activities a week and turn them all in on Friday.

This week in writing we are starting our rough draft for our Personal Narrative. Students should have brought home their gold pre-write this past weekend if they were not done. This pre-write should now be finished at home because we are ready to move on. If students get behind on this, they will be behind on their entire story. We need to write our rough drafts in class this week and edit and revise them. Next week we will have the Chromebooks in class to type our story. The final draft of the Personal Narrative is due next Friday, September 11th.

This week in math we are focusing on our division facts. We will be practicing, playing games, and making flash cards for our division facts. We are stressing how these facts are just the opposite of our multiplication facts. On Friday we will be taking a test on our multiplication and division facts. This will not be timed, I just want to see if students can solve each fact any way they wish.

This week in social studies we are continuing to learn about geography. We are looking at Google Earth and finding places on it. We are also going to identify Utah's counties on a map and look at the geography of them.

Don't forget our Watch Dog Kickoff this Thursday at 6:00. Pizza will be served! Also, if  you were not able to attend Back to School night, I will be sending home with Tuesday envelopes the handouts I passed out. PLEASE, make sure that your student brings these envelopes back to school each week so you don't miss any fliers or important info we have to pass out! Also, with Tuesday envelopes will be book orders. You can send book orders back to school with your student and a check for the amount, or you can order and pay online at scholastic.com/readingclub. If you order online you will need our classroom code which is DH29Z.

Finally, if you are able to help out in our classroom once a week please let me know! I only have 2 volunteers so far and I need 1 person to help out each day. So please let me know if you are able to come in for 30 mins 1 day a week and help out. Thank you so much!

August 24-28th

Every week I will will be emailing you and posting on my blog, http://mrswheatleysfourthgrade.blogspot.com/, what we are doing for that week in class. On my blog I will include what students should have in their planners for homework each day. Here is our first full week!

This week in reading we will be learning about the structure of stories. We are also going to be learning how to Close Read. This is where we read the same passage multiple times and look for different things as we read. This week we will begin doing reading logs for our homework. Students are to read 20 minutes each night. Monday thru Friday, students are to fill out a pink reading log for the minutes they read. Students will receive this reading log on Mondays and they will be due the following Monday. Please help make sure that you student reads each night, fills out their reading log, and turns it in to me the following Monday.

This week in writing we are starting our personal narrative. Students will be writing a story about something that happened to them. We will talk about what a good story is, all the parts in a good story, and how to write a good story.

This week in math we will start working on our multiplication facts. We have been reviewing addition and subtraction and will now practice our multiplication facts. We will discuss different strategies for solving multiplication problems and we will make some flash cards. Please practice multiplication facts with your student. It is essential that students have these memorized before we move on.

This week in social studies we will be talking about geography. We will learn about maps, lines of longitude and latitude, and will practice finding places on maps using those lines and their degrees.

This Thursday is Back to School Night. Please come and learn a bit about how our class and 4th grade will run this year. Also, we will be doing Road to Success again this year. Coming home in Tuesday envelopes will be a ticket with the code you need to register your student. Please follow the directions on it to register and help your student to log the minutes they read this year. They have the chance to win prizes as they log their minutes on Road to Success.

I'm so excited to work with your student this year! Please let me know if you have any questions or need anything.
