March 30th-April 3rd

This week in reading we will continue to review reading strategies. We will talk about making connections from the text to our own lives as well as other texts. We also will talk about how to monitor meaning so we can be sure that we are understanding what we are reading. Our spelling is Sort 52 this week with the suffixes -ness, -ful, and -less.

This week in writing we are continuing to work on our Animal Research Report. We will be working on our draft for most of this week. If students are not done with their research, they should be bringing home their pre-write so they can finish the research they still need. Students are required to use at least 3 sources for their research. They need to have at least 1 book and 1 website, and the 3rd can be another of either.

This week in math we will be finishing our decimals unit. We will be preparing students in class and in Target Time for our decimals test on Friday. We will do lots of word problems this week with decimals, including learning how to divide money. We will also do plenty of reviewing for it. So far, students have been doing very well with decimals and I am very pleased!

This week in social studies we are talking about the things needed for a community to thrive. We are learning about ghost towns to help us identify what communities need. We will discuss what producers and consumers are as well.

March 23-27th

This week in reading we are going to start focusing on some reading strategies. We will cover the before reading strategies of surveying features and vocabulary, setting a purpose/goal, and making a plan. We will also review inferring, predicting, and summarizing. Our spelling this week ins Sort 51 with Comparatives. These words end in -er, -est, -ier, and -iest. 20 points are still needed this week as well as the normal reading log.

This week in writing we are starting our Animal Research Report. We have chosen animals that we want to learn more about. Students will be doing their research in computer specialty class and will start writing during class writing time. On Wednesday we will have time to finish presenting our Author Report, so if your student has not completed their report yet, please make sure they are done by Wednesday so they can present. The report is worth 300 points total: 100 for the written report, 100 for the poster, and 100 for the oral presentation.

This week in math we are continuing our work with decimals. We will work with money this week and will learn how to add fractional parts with denominators of 10 and 100. We will also add, compare, and order decimals. In Target Time we will be reviewing place value. We are reviewing the concept that a number in one place is 10x the value of the same number in the place to the right of it. For example, the 3 in 134 is 10x the 3 in 413 because in 134 it is worth 30 and in 413 it is only worth 3. This can be a tricky concept for students, but it is critical for students to understand this idea.

This week in social studies we are writing reports on a leader in Utah's history. Students are researching on a leader and writing a short report, 7 sentences, on what they have learned about the leader. This report is done completely in class, and will be graded.

March 16-20th

This week in reading we will be reading 2 texts on a similar topic, and using the information in both to combine what we have learned. We are focusing on texts about fossils in order to review that topic. Our spelling this week in Sort 49. Some of these words will be hard for students. They start with number prefixes like uni-, bi-, and tri-. Make sure that students do all 20 points worth of work and turn them in on Friday.

This week in writing we are finishing our Author Reports. Students will have most of class writing time and some of computer specialty time to work on these. Students have a yellow paper detailing exactly what they need to do. They should have a written report with 8 paragraphs as well as a poster with a flip book we will make in class and pictures that have to do with their author. If your student is not close to done with their report, please encourage them to bring it home to work on it!

This week in math we are introducing decimals. We will learn the place value of tenths and hundredths. We will draw pictures, work with hundredths grids, make number lines, and find equivalent fractions for fractions and their equivalent decimals in the tenths and hundredths. Target Time this week will focus on reviewing factors and multiples. Students who are in groups for Target Time who need a lot of extra practice, will start receiving Target Time homework. If your student comes home with Target Time homework, please help them do these pages so they can learn and practice the concepts we are reviewing.

This week in social studies students are receiving their Native American Homes project. Students will bring home a blue sheet detailing the assignment. Basically, students need to make a hogan, tepee, or wickiup with natural materials that Native Americans would have used to make their homes.  For my class, the project is due April 20th. For Miss Goldsborough's class, it is due April 21st. For more information on the houses including pictures, please visit my blog.
