February 23-27th

This week in reading we will be finishing learning about text structures. We will talk about descriptions, problem/solution, and sequence text structures. We will be looking at passages and identifying what text structure the passage is. Our spelling is Sort 45 with ph- and gh- words. Some of these words are a little tricky so please make sure that your student does their homework and studies their words plenty!

This week in writing we are starting our Author Report. Tonight, students need to pick their author. They should pick 2-3 authors they could do their report on, because tomorrow I will let students pick and they will be first come first serve. Students CAN NOT do the same author as someone else in the class. So if their fist pick is already gone, they will have to pick someone else. So please, help your student come up with some possibilities. We will begin our research on our author tomorrow, therefore, they need their author picked so they can get right to work.

This week in math we are studying shapes. We are talking about the different types of quadrilaterals there are and then we will talk about lines of symmetry. We will also be practicing shape patterns, making and solving them. In target time we will be talking about multi-step word problems and practicing drawing pictures and writing equations for them.

This week in social studies we will continue to talk about the Mormon Pioneers. We will talk about what they did when they got to Utah and how they settled and colonized the state. We will also talk about how our lives are different from their lives back then.

February 17-20th

This week in reading we are going to be talking about the different text structures of informational texts. This week we will go in depth with cause and effect and compare and contrast. We will identify signal words to help us identify what type of text it and how to identify what is important in that type of text. We are done with essays for homework, so if your student has not finished all 4 essays, please make sure they finish them this week. Our spelling this week is Sort 44 with silent consonants. Students again need to do 20 points worth of work this week for their spelling homework.

This week in writing we are finishing our imagination story. We will edit, revise, and publish this story in class. We will also be going over some language standards as well. We will talk about adverbs, adjectives,  and coordinating conjunctions, all of which students will be required to use properly in their stories this week.

This week in math we are starting our geometry unit. We will be talking about angles, lines, and triangles this week. We will name each of these and talk about how to identify what they are. We will not have Target Time this week since some classes are still taking the writing test.

This week in social studies we will be talking about the Mormon Pioneers. We will talk about why they came to Utah, how they got here, and events that happened on their way.

The end of this term is coming up quickly! All missing assignments are due February 20th, that is THIS FRIDAY!!! Missing assignments will not be accepted after that. I will send home missing assignments this week and email you student's progress reports so you know what they are missing.

February 9 Homework Essay - Computers Grading

Should computers grade student essays?

Humans can grade about 30 essays per hour. Computers can grade thousands of essays in seconds. But humans are better at scoring, right?

Not so, says Mark Shermis, dean of the College of Education at the University of Akron, in Ohio. He used computer programs to grade more than 16,000 middle school and high school essays that had already been graded by humans. He found there wasn’t much difference in the scores.

Shermis acknowledges, however, that the grading software has its limitations. “It can’t recognize a good argument,” he explained. “But it can tell you that you’ve mistaken there fortheir, and tell you that you’ve made some mechanical errors.”

Les Perelman argues that the grading software will teach bad writing. He was the director of writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 26 years. While testing one grading system, he wrote a bogus essay that received the highest score. How did he trick the computer? Just throw out all the rules for good writing that you’ve ever learned, he says.

“Almost half of the score is based on length,” he told TFK. “The more words you write the better. Never use a simple word when you can use a big word. Never say many, say myriador plethora.”

Do you think computers should grade student essays?

February 9-13

This week in reading we are working on explaining event, procedures, and ideas. We will reading science and social studies texts and explaining the events, procedures, and ideas in them. We are doing our last essay for homework this week. We are answering the question: Should computers grade students essays? Again, students need to do a web, rough draft on lined paper, type it into Google docs and share it, and put it in My Access.

This week in writing we are taking our writing test! We will be working on this in the afternoons today, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Students will be required to write a short informative/explanatory essay, as well as a persuasive/opinion essay. Students should apply all that we have learned in class on these essays! We will also be writing fun, imaginative essays in class. We will finish them by next Friday in class.

This week in math we are finishing our mixed numbers and fractions unit. We will do word problems with mixed numbers and learn about line plots with fractions. On Friday we will take our test for this unit.

In social studies we will learn about the first people other that Native Americans who came to Utah. These people were explorers and mountain men. We will talk about the different people who came and what they did.

On Friday we will be having our Valentines Day party. Students should bring some type of box for exchanging Valentines. If students bring Valentines to exchange in class, they need to bring one for every student in the class. We have 28 students in class. If you signed up to help for our party, make sure you remember to come help! We are excited to have you come and celebrate with us!

February 2nd Homework Essay - Chores

Should kids be rewarded for doing chores?

Many kids help out around the house with chores such as emptying the dishwasher, putting laundry away, and taking out the trash. In exchange, some kids get allowances or other rewards such as extra computer time.

But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. Susie Walton, a parenting educator and family coach, believes that by rewarding kids, parents are sending a message that work isn’t worth doing unless you get something in return. “Running any kind of household is a team effort,” Walton told TFK. “A home is a living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and that families decide together how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like everyone wants it to look.”

Other people believe that getting a cash allowance or other reward motivates kids to do chores, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to earn money. There are also now apps that give kids points and digital gifts that can be redeemed either online or in the real word. With the ChoreMonster app, kids earn digital points by completing chores that they can turn in for real life rewards such as extra Xbox time or a trip to the mall.  “Our goal is to empower kids so they can earn rewards,” says Chris Bergman, founder of ChoreMonster. “Kids need positive reinforcement to help motivate them.”

What do you think? Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? Or should kids help out around their homes without getting something in return?

February 2-6th

This week in reading we are going to be reading fairy tales, and comparing and contrasting the themes in them. Our essay this week for homework is: Should kids be rewarded for doing chores? This week I will not provide a pink, guided rough draft sheet for students. They need to write their draft on regular lined paper. They should still be following the format of the pink rough draft though. I have been providing these for students to help them know how to format and organize their draft. By now, they should know how to do this.

This week in writing we are completing our preparation for the Sage Writing Tests. This test will be next week. Students will need to write a persuasive/opinion essay as well as a short informative essay. This week we will be going over how to do this second, shorter essay. We will write a cause and effect essay, an explanation, and an informational essay.

This week in math we will be talking about mixed numbers. We will review how to change mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa. Then we will learn how to add, subtract, and regroup mixed numbers.

This week in social studies we are going to start our focus on the key events in Utah's history. We will start with an overview by making a timeline of the events, and then we will study the different Native American groups that lived here.

Don't forget to come in for Parent Teacher Conferences this week! I'm excited to see you all and chat with you about how your student is doing in class and how we can help them! If you haven't signed up for a conference yet, I have assigned you a time. I will send a reminder note home with students today to remind you or to let you know what time you have been given. Please fill out the bottom of the form and send it back to school with your student when you get it. If you can't make that time, please call the office to reschedule.
