February 28-March 3rd

Dear Parents,

We got to watch the School Spelling Bee on Friday and it was so fun to watch our friends do so well. We were so impressed with the words everyone could spell and how hard they must have studied! It makes us want to do better at spelling! I hope everyone had fun at Classic Skating last week! Just so you know, I will be gone Monday through Wednesday of this week so we will be having a sub. I will be back on Thursday and Friday. Don’t forget to sign your student’s field trip permission slip. Students should have brought this home last Friday. They need to bring it back by this Thursday or they will not be able to get a school lunch. Our Field Trip will be March 17th, to BYU’s Bean Museum. If you would like to be a volunteer and come with us, please fill out the volunteer section of the yellow permission slip.

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be reviewing identifying the problem and solution, and other important events in a story. We will also talk about visualizing what we are reading. Our spelling is list #21 with closed syllables. Students should be spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will be continuing our Geometry unit by focusing on angles. We will be learning about how angles go around in a circle. We will identify fractions of a circle and the angles they are. We will learn that angles are measured by degrees and will learn how to use a protractor to find how many degrees an angle is.

Writing: This week we will be doing another opinion essay. We reviewed how to write and opinion essay last week and this week students will do their own that will be graded. They will be writing about the Genetic Traits of animals. They have through Friday to work on this in class. If they are not done on Friday, they should finish it over the weekend at home.

Science: As we continue to talk about different animals and UT environments, we will look at the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. There is also an exciting animal adaptation project that the students will get to do during class this week. We will also start discussing the web of life and the fact that everything is related.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be talking about what life was like for the Pioneers after they settled down in Utah. We will learn about some of the different cities they settled, implements they used, and talk about how their life was different from our life now.

This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Spelling #21 – 20 mins study
Lesson 10.4-P195, 10.5-P197, 10.6-P199, 10.7-P201
*Math, reading, and spelling are due on Friday

Thanks!

February 21-24th

Dear Parents,

We had such a fun Valentine’s Day Party! We had a blast doing art projects, passing out Valentines, and doing the activities the parent helpers planned! Thank you to all of you parents that helped in any way, including making Valentines Boxes. They all looked so good! Don’t forget Skate Night at Classic Skating on Thursday! It should be tons of fun!

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be reviewing and taking our Unit 4 test. Then we will read a reader’s theater together. There will be no spelling homework, but instead there will be another writing homework. This time we will be writing an explanatory essay on how watching television today is different from the past. We will have time to work on this in class, but if students don’t finish by Friday, they should be taking it home to work on as well. They need to do a prewrite, type it, revise and edit, share with me, and put it in My Access. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will be continuing our Geometry Unit. We will learn how to classify quadrilaterals, find lines of symmetry, and complete shape patterns. For Target Time we will continue to review mixed numbers.

Writing: This week we will start our review of explanatory writing. We will write and essay altogether that will not be graded, but is just for students to remember how to do it. This will help them with their writing homework for the week, because this will be an example of how to do their homework essay. Then we will review how to do an opinion essay. We will be trading on an off each week between these for the next several weeks to prepare students for their Sage Writing Test this spring.

Science: We will discuss elevation and tie it into forests. We will also start learning how to classify trees and animals using classification charts. There is a fun activity this week involving classifying different kinds of chips to introduce this classification concept.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we are going to be talking more about the Mormon Pioneers. We will talk about important events with them, what it was like for them coming to Utah, and what it was like settling here in Utah.

This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Television Essay
Lesson 10.1-P189, 10.2- P191, 10.3-P193

February 13-17th

Dear Parents,

I was so glad I got to meet with all of you last week! You are amazing and such supportive parents, and you have the greatest kids! We have such a wonderful class this year! Just don’t forget, all missing assignments need to be in by Tuesday, February 14th. Also, on Tuesday, Valentines Day, we will be passing out Valentines and having a Valentines Day Party. Students should make and bring a Valentines box to school that day. If they can’t make one at home, they are welcome to make one with me at recess. Students are welcome to bring Valentines to pass out that day as well. We have 28 students in our class. If you cannot get Valentines for your student, let me know and I’ll take care of it.

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be talking about the theme in poems. We will read some narrative poetry, discuss elements of poetry, and identify the theme in the poems we read. Our spelling is list #20 with the ô sound as in aw and ough. Students should be spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will be taking our mixed numbers test on Monday. This test will go on the next Trimester’s grades, not this current one, so that we have time to review and then retake the test. Next we will start our Geometry Unit. We will learn about angles, lines, and triangles this week.

Writing: This week we will finish our animal report. Students will read their reports to each other and help each other to improve their papers. Then we will edit, revise, and type our paper. It will be due this Friday, February 17th.
