Dear Parents,
We got to design and engineer our own telephones last Friday
for our reading parties. It was so much fun! We kept testing them out as we
made them and then trying to improve them to make the sound louder and clearer.
We could definitely hear through many of the phones! You should check out the
pictures of some of our phones! Also, don’t forget that if you haven’t signed
up for parent teacher conferences, you can still contact the office to set up
an appointment for Tuesday or Wednesday. If none of those times work for you,
please let me know and we can find another time to meet.
Here is what we are doing in class this week:
Reading: This week we will be talking about cause and effect
again. We will identify the causes and their effects in the expository texts we
read. Our spelling is list #19 with oi and ou sounds. Students should be
spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should also be reading
20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.
Math: This week we will be finishing our Mixed Numbers Unit.
We will be learning how to subtract mixed numbers with regrouping and do word
problems with multiple steps in them. We will also learn about line plots and
use them when adding mixed numbers. We will be taking our test on Monday so
students should be bringing home their pretest on Friday to study.
Writing: This week we will continue with our animal report.
Students will finish their rough draft in class and will learn how to cite the
sources they used in their animal report. This will be due next Friday,
February 17th.
Science: We are learning about Utah environments. We will
review wetlands by doing a puppet show. We will also learn about forests and
what defines a forest. The students will learn the difference between the terms
deciduous and coniferous.
Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be
talking about the Native American tribes in Utah and we will look at some of
their pictographs. We will then we will talk about the explorers that came
through Utah and the mountain men who were here.
This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
