December 15-19th

This week in reading we are going to be comparing a book and a movie. We will be reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas and watching the movie. Then we will write a comparison essay about the similarities and the differences between the two of them. Our spelling will be Christmas List #2. Students still need to do the normal 20 points with this list as always.

This week in writing we are finishing our letters to Mr. Campbell. We will be reading them in class tomorrow, picking our class's best letter, and then we will read that letter to Mr. Campbell and the entire 4th grade. If he lets us, we will have our PJ day on Wednesday. To be considered for the person from our class who gets to read to Mr. Campbell, students MUST HAVE THEIR LETTER ON GOOGLE DOCS AND SHARED WITH ME BY TODAY!!!! If they didn't get it done in class today, they must finish it at home tonight.

This week in math we are going to be doing word problems with equivalent fractions. We are also going to be talking about how fractions compare to each other. We will learn how to tell which fraction is bigger and how to put fractions in order.

This week in social studies we will be taking our Counties Test. For my class, their test is tomorrow. For Miss Goldsborough's class, their test will be on Wednesday. We made posters telling how we can remember each county seat. I have posted pictures of them on my blog so students can use them to study.

Don't forget all of our fun things happening this week. We have our Christmas Sing this week on Thursday. You are invited to come listen to us sing at 9:30 or 1:00. I have posted a video of Holly Jolly Christmas with the English and Chinese words on my blog to help students learn the words. Also, don't forget that Friday will be our school pajama day since it is the last day before Christmas Break. It will be a common day so all students will start at 8:00 and end at 2:15. We will also be having our multiplication ice cream party that day for students who passed off each of their facts.

Christmas Sing Songs

Holly Jolly Christmas

Have a holly jolly Christmas
It's the best time of the year
I don't know if there'll be snow
But have a cup of cheer

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And when you walk down the street
Say hello to friends you know
And everyone you meet

Ho ho the mistletoe
Hung where you can see
Somebody waits for you
Kiss her once for me

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And in case you didn't hear
Oh, bygolly
Have a holly jolly Christmas
This year

Have a holly jolly Christmas
It’s the best time of the year

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And when you walk down the street
Say hello to friends you know
And everyone you meet

Ho ho the mistletoe
Hung where you can see
Somebody waits for you
Kiss her once for me

Have a holly jolly Christmas
And in case you didn't hear
Oh, bygolly
Have a holly jolly Christmas
This year

Jingle Bell Rock

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring
Snowin' and blowin' up bushels of fun
Now, the jingle hop has begun

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time
Dancin' and prancin' in Jingle Bell Square
In the frosty air

What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go glidin' in a one-horse sleigh

Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and a-mingle in the jinglin' feet
That's the jingle bell rock, yeah

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time
Dancin' and prancin' in Jingle Bell Square
In the frosty air

What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go glidin' in a one-horse sleigh

Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and a-mingle in the jinglin' feet
That's the jingle bell,
That's the jingle bell,
That's the jingle bell rock, yeah

December 8-12th

This week in reading we will be reviewing a few things. First, we will be reviewing finding the main idea and writing summaries of non-fiction texts. Then we will be talking about the elements that make us a fluent reader: pausing, phrasing, intonation, stress, pace/rate, and integration of all the elements. Lastly, we will be reviewing finding the theme and making predictions. Our spelling this week is Christmas List #1. It is not sorted by category/type of word, but is just Christmas words. Students still need to do the regular 20 points worth of work for these words.

This week in writing we are working on writing our letters to Mr. Campbell persuading him on why we should or should not get a PJ day for the entire 4th grade. We will finish our 4-square drafts and edit and revise our letters. We will also start typing our letters.

This week in math we are starting our next unit on equivalent fractions. We will be focusing on finding equivalent fractions and finding common denominators for fractions. In Target Time we will also be working on fractions.

This week in social studies we will be finishing our County Quizzes. Our final test will be next week. We are also going to be doing a few geography activities.

Don't forget, we are doing penny wars this week. Students are encouraged to bring in their coins and bills to donate to help families in need this Christmas season. Also, we are practicing our songs for the Christmas Sing. We will be singing Holly Jolly Christmas and Jingle Bell Rock. I will have the songs posted on my blog so students can practice the words.

December 1st-5th

This week in reading we are focusing on making connections between different versions of a story. We will be reading plays, stories, and watching video clips. Our spelling list is Sort 29 with words ending in -le.

This week in writing we are still talking about our opinions. We will be starting a persuasive letter trying to persuade Mr. Campbell to let the entire 4th grade have a pajama day. We are focusing on coming up with 3 main ideas/reasons why he should let us have it, and coming up with 3 details about each reason. If your student has not yet shared their Turkey letter with me on Google Docs, they still need to do that as well. We will copy them onto My Access in class later on for a score.

This week in math we are finishing our Place Value Unit. We will be taking our test on place value on Friday. In Target Time we will be working on word problems and then taking our Word Problems test in Target Time.

This week in social studies we are presenting our Recreational Activities project and we will be taking our next Counties Quiz. This week's quiz will be on the Southwest and East and Southwest.

November 24-25th

This week in reading we are talking about Thanksgiving and learning about the Pilgrims. We will not have spelling this week, but students still need to fill out a reading log for today and tomorrow for reading 20 mins.

This week in writing we are finishing our Turkey/Farmer letters. Students should have brought home their draft tonight if they weren't done typing this in class. They need to type this on their Google Docs and share this with me. We will put these into My Access tomorrow in class which will give students a grade up to 6.0 on their writing.

This week in math we are working on naming, comparing, and ordering numbers.

This week in social studies my class will be taking their first counties quiz. The study guide for this front and back quiz are available on my blog.

Today students got their missing assignments sheets. These include everything from this new term. Please have them turn these assignments in ASAP!

Have a great and safe Thanksgiving!

County Quizzes and Test Study Guides

Since next week students will be starting their county quizzes and the following week they will take their county test, I thought I would show you a copy of what they are expected to know and do. The first date on each is for my class and the second for Miss Goldsborough's class. Students need to memorize where the counties are and match what their county seat is. The names of counties don't have to be memorized. Here are copies of the answer key/study guides for all of the quizzes and the test. Good luck studying!
