November 24-25th

This week in reading we are talking about Thanksgiving and learning about the Pilgrims. We will not have spelling this week, but students still need to fill out a reading log for today and tomorrow for reading 20 mins.

This week in writing we are finishing our Turkey/Farmer letters. Students should have brought home their draft tonight if they weren't done typing this in class. They need to type this on their Google Docs and share this with me. We will put these into My Access tomorrow in class which will give students a grade up to 6.0 on their writing.

This week in math we are working on naming, comparing, and ordering numbers.

This week in social studies my class will be taking their first counties quiz. The study guide for this front and back quiz are available on my blog.

Today students got their missing assignments sheets. These include everything from this new term. Please have them turn these assignments in ASAP!

Have a great and safe Thanksgiving!

County Quizzes and Test Study Guides

Since next week students will be starting their county quizzes and the following week they will take their county test, I thought I would show you a copy of what they are expected to know and do. The first date on each is for my class and the second for Miss Goldsborough's class. Students need to memorize where the counties are and match what their county seat is. The names of counties don't have to be memorized. Here are copies of the answer key/study guides for all of the quizzes and the test. Good luck studying!

November 17-21st

This week in reading we are talking about 1st and 2nd hand accounts. A 1st hand account of an event is written by someone who was actually there and actually saw what happened. A 2nd hand account is from someone who was not there and did not see with their own eyes what happened, but instead they found out from someone else what happened. Our spelling this week is Sort 27 with -er, -ir, and -ur words.

This week in writing we are continuing to write Thanksgiving persuasive essays. We are either being a farmer or a turkey and persuading the other to either eat the turkey or not to. We are focusing on picking 3 main ideas and having 3 details that go with each main idea. We will also be writing introductions and conclusions.

This week in math we will be taking our test on fractions. Then we move on to our place value unit. This will focus on having students understand our base 10 system and how to do problems with large numbers.

This week in social studies we will be starting our recreation project. Students will be creating a powerpoint presentation in class on their drive about a recreation activity they can do in Utah. They have specific requirements for what needs to be on each slide. They will be working with a partner to do this. Also, next week we will start taking quizzes to prepare students for their counties test. I will post study guides of the exact quizzes on my blog so you can help students prepare for the quizzes.

November 10-14th

This week in reading we are talking about point of view. We will be discussing the difference between a story told in 1st person and a story told in 3rd person. We will be identifying whether a story was told in 1st or 3rd person as well as comparing and contrasting points of view. Our spelling is Sort 21. This sort has short and long e sounds in the 1st or 2nd syllable.

This week in writing we are starting our Opinion/Persuasive Unit. This is very important in 4th grade. We will be discussing opinions on things and practicing persuading people to believe our opinion. Students will be persuading me to give them $10 in Maui Money. Then they will be starting a paper for Thanksgiving from the point of view of a farmer or a turkey.

This week in math we will be talking about fractions. We will be doing a lot of foundation activities with fractions such as breaking the fraction apart and making equations, identifying and understanding unit fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. We will also be taking our long division test during Target Time.

This week in social studies we are creating our own city and identifying what we will need to sustain our city. We will also be talking about different environmental issues and peoples' point of view on those issues. Then we will start a project about recreation that we will work on for quite a while. Students should also begin studying their counties at home so they will be ready for the test next month. I will be adding links to study counties on my blog.

November 3-7th

This week in reading we are going to be talking about prose, poetry, and drama. We will be discussing characteristics of each of them and discussing similarities and differences between them. Our spelling will be Sort 20. Just like the past 2 lists, these words have a long  u in the first or second syllables. Don't forget to read, fill out a reading log, and track your student's days on Road to Success.

This week in writing we are finishing our poetry unit. We will finish learning the last of our types of poems. We will revise, edit, and publish 6 of our best poems. On Friday, we will share a few of our favorite poems that we wrote. We will also be talking about common adages, idioms, and proverbs, and discussing what they mean.

This week in math we are finishing our word problems unit. We are focusing on how to do multistep problems with equations. We will be doing multiplication and division problems mainly. We will also be reviewing long division in Target Time this week.

This week in social studies we are talking about how the geography of Utah affects our health and safety. We will also talk about how humans have changed the physical environment/geography of Utah. Also, students will be making and bringing home study guides to help them study for their counties test. This test will not be until the last week of school in December, but it is best to start studying now. Their study guide is an EXACT copy of the test, and is exactly what they will be expected to know. They need to match the county seat to the correct county, and label on a map where each county is.

Again, ALL missing assignments are due this Friday, November 7th. Please make sure your student has everything turned in before then!
