April 25-29th

This week in reading we are going to continue our reviewing. We will focus this week on understanding characters and settings in depth as well as reviewing 1st hand vs 2nd hand accounts. We will also begin our final DRA of the year. This is our reading test that students will read out loud to us for fluency and then complete a comprehension packet that we reviewed last week. For spelling our words are Sort 56 having to do with geography. Students should do 20 points worth of activities this week and turn them in on Friday. They also should complete their reading log to turn in on Monday.

This week in writing we will be finishing our Porquois stories. Students should be finishing their storyboard/draft this week in class, editing and revising it, and then starting their book. This is such a fun project for students! We will be reading our books to the class on Monday, May 2nd. We will also be reviewing the language concepts students are still struggling with.

This week in math we are also reviewing. Homework this week will be a little different. I have identified 4 of the lowest concepts for each student and I have assigned them homework pages based on that. So homework this week will be very individualized. Students should be bringing home a strip that says their 4 sheets on Monday. They should be ripping out from their book those 4 sheets on Monday and they have until Friday to complete them all. Since these are each a low area for your student specifically, please, please take this opportunity to help your student with these 4 concepts! This is also for you to know what your student really needs help with so you can better prepare your student for the end of the year test. Hopefully this will be a great opportunity for students to better learn and practice the concepts they are still struggling with this year!

This week in social studies we will finish talking about economics by discussing jobs and workers in Utah. We will then discuss the role of citizens and the role of the government in the State of Utah. We will also learn a little about different elected offices in Utah.

April 18-22nd

This week in reading we are continuing our review. We will focus on reviewing main ideas and text structures. We will also review how to do the comprehension part of the DRA. Then we will begin testing students on their last DRA reading test of the year. Our spelling this week is Sort 55  with "i before e except after c" words. These can be tricky to remember when to actually put i before e and when e goes before i. 20 points still need to be turned in on Friday. Students should also be competing their reading log to turn in on Monday.

This week in writing we are starting our last writing project. We will be writing Porquois tales. These are stories that explain why or how something is in nature. Students begin writing their stories with their pre-write and rough draft this week. Later, we will make these stories into books.

This week in math we are first going to finish our multiplication of whole numbers and fractions unit. We will review on Monday and take our test on Tuesday. Students should bring home their pre-test as a study guide on Monday. After this test, we will begin our end of the year math reviewing. We will do this in class time and in Target Time. We will be reviewing the concepts that students are still struggling with the most or have forgotten from earlier this year.

This week in social studies we will be presenting our Native American Homes Projects. My class's projects are due on Tuesday, April 19th and Mrs. Ditto's class's projects are due on Wednesday, April 20th. Students should bring their home to school on that day. They will show the class their projects and we will display them out in the hall. We will also continue to learn about economics.

April 11-15th

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe break!

This week in reading we will continue to review our lowest concepts. We will continue to review the differences between poems, drama, and prose and terms that go with each. We will also review figuring out the main idea of a text. Lastly, we will review text structures of non-fiction texts. Our spelling this week will be Sort 54 with is Homographs. These should be pretty easy. This is pointing out words that are spelled the same but we say them differently. Students should make sure that they know what each of the words mean. Students also need to complete their reading log and read 20 minutes each day to turn in on Monday.

This week in writing we are finishing our Animal Report. Students should have finished their rough draft before Spring Break. Now we are focusing on editing, revising, and typing our Animal Report. They are due on Friday. We will be reading them to the class that day.

This week in math we are starting our last unit! We will be learning how to multiply fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers. This should be a pretty easy unit to end with. We will learn how to do all of this this week and then review and take our test next week. For Target Time we will begin Math Reviewing. Students took a review assessment before Spring Break that covered everything we have learned this year so we could see what concepts we still need to review before the end of the year Sage Test. We will start reviewing these concepts in Target Time this week.

This week in social studies we will be creating our own communities. We have been talking about what we need in a community to survive and for the community to thrive. Students will now draw their own community, and include all the things that it would need. We will present these to the class. We will also begin to learn what the economy is and what is involved in it. Also, don't forget to have your student work on their Native American Homes Project! It is due next week!
