October 27-October 31st

This week in reading we are focusing on learning new words in texts. We will be reading a lot of different information texts and figuring out the meanings to different words in them that we might not already know. For spelling we are doing Sort 18 which is very similar to last week's sort, but this time with the long -i sound in the first or second syllable. Again, students need to be filling out and turning in their reading log as well as doing 20 points for their spelling homework.

This week in writing we are starting our poetry unit. We will be learning how to write 9 different types of poems. This week we are learning acrostic, color poem, haiku, cinquain, limerick, and tounge twisters. On Friday we will be reading our Haunted House stories. If students are still not done with these, they need to finish them at home this week and bring them back to read and turn in on Friday.

This week in math we are working on word problems. We will be doing division word problems, perimeter and area problems, rounding word problems, and multistep problems. It is difficult at first for students to do word problems, but we are working through them identifying key words, drawing pictures, and writing equations.

This week in social studies we will be talking about how communication and transportation in Utah is affected by the geography we have here. We will also be making maps showing how we get to school everyday. We will also start studying our counties. Before Christmas Break, we will take a test on all of the counties in Utah. Students will need to have memorized where the county is and be able to match it to it's county seat. They will not need to memorize what the counties are though. Students will eventually bring home a study guide to study these at home and I will post resources on my blog to help study these as well.

The end of the first trimester is coming up very quickly. All missing assignments MUST be turned in by next Friday, November 7th. I will be sending home missing assignment sheets this week as well as emailing you their progress reports.

They still should read each day and turn in a reading log for both weeks, but they will have 2 weeks to get their spelling done.

This week in writing we are working on our drafts of our Haunted House. Students should have brought home on Friday their pre-write if they are not done with it yet so we can write our rough draft. Students are required to describe 4 things in each room of the house, and include a transition word, vivid verb, and preposition at the beginning of each room/paragraph.

Our spelling is Sort 16 with more -ed and -ing ending patterns. Please make sure that your student is doing their 20 points worth of activities and turning them in each week. Also, please make sure they are doing their 20 minutes of reading at least every night, filling out their reading log, and turning it in!

This week in writing we are starting our Haunted House stories. We will be describing each room in a haunted house and what we see in each of the rooms. We also just finished our How To papers. We were able to publish all those that were typed onto our class writing blog so we all can see them. Feel free to go to our class writing blog (http://mrswheatleysclasswriting.blogspot.com) and read your student's paper as well as the rest of the class's papers! If your student did not get a final, hand written copy of this turned in to me for a grade, please help them get it in before the 2 week late deadline.

This week in math we are finishing our multiplication unit and starting our division unit. We will be talking about what to do with remainders and dividing large numbers with remainders.
