September 22-26th

This week in reading we are learning how to find the main idea and important details in a text. This will help us to summarize a text. For spelling we are doing Sort 8 which is Unusual Plurals. Please make sure that your student is getting their 20 points worth of spelling activities done each week and turned in to me! Also, please make sure that your student is filling out their reading log each week night and turning it in on Mondays.

This week in writing we are continuing to write our How Tos. If students do not have their yellow Pre-write done by the end of class tomorrow, they need to bring it home and finish it for homework. We will be working on our drafts for the rest of the week.

This week in math we are learning how to multiply large numbers. We will be multiplying up to 1 digit by 4 digits. For example: 5 x 1,735. We will be using models, pictures, and learning the standard algrothim to solve these problems. I will be stressing that we can break problems up. For example, 5 x 1,735 really means 5 x 1,000 +5 x 700 + 5 x 30 + 5 x 5. This breaks the problem up into manageable chunks.

This week in social studies we are talking about the regions of Utah and what is found in those regions.  We are also talking about how the landforms in Utah were formed over time and what caused Utah to look the way it does now. Students will also be receiving their County Reports assignments. They will be receiving a sheet that tells what is required, as well as sheets guiding them to find what they need to. They will be researching a county in Utah and putting together a poster with the information they found. Students will probably need your help to do this! They will also probably need access to a computer and or books about their county. My class's reports are due October 9th, and Miss Goldsborough's class's reports are due October 10th.

Tomorrow I will be sending home missing assignment sheets as well as emailing you progress reports for your student. Our 4th grade policy is that we accept late homework with no deduction of points until 2 weeks after the due date. After 2 weeks, missing assignments become zeros and no points will be given for them. Please help your student to get all of their missing assignments in within 2 weeks of their due date! Also, at anytime if you are wondering how your student is doing in class, you can check Skyward and see their grades.
