January 30-February 3rd

Dear Parents,

We recently did another STEAM activity where we made and flew airplanes that had to carry cargo (paperclips). We saw which airplane could fly the farthest with holding the most cargo. It was so fun and we got to make several different designs and test them out! Be sure to check out our pictures of this activity!

Also, Parent Teacher Conferences will be next week. Please make sure you go online or call the office to schedule your appointment as soon as you can. Here is the link to go to: https://www.canyoncreeksoftware.com/scheduler/ut/alpine/

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be talking about point of view in historical fiction. We will identify how people felt about issues and experiences during different events in history. Our spelling is list #18 with three different u sounds. Students should be spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. We will also be starting our class spelling bee this week. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will first take our Measurement Test on Monday. Next we will be starting our Mixed Numbers Unit. We will review how to switch between mixed numbers and improper fractions and then we will start adding mixed numbers.

Writing: This week we will start our next unit which will be an animal report. We will start researching using books and the Chromebooks and then will start writing our rough draft.

Science: The students will take their fossils unit test tomorrow. Our next unit is about ecosystems and biodiversity. This week we will learn about wetlands in Utah. We will learn specifically where wetlands in UT are located, animals that are found in wetlands, and what a wetland is. The students have the option of earning some extra credit by completing a fossils crossword puzzle. This crossword puzzle is due on Friday, February 3rd and is completely optional. If it is completed correctly, I will add 10 points to your students lowest test score. For Target Time this week we will be reviewing science vocabulary words.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will start talking about Native Americans in Utah. We will talk about archeology, the ancient Indian tribes of Utah, and the 5 main tribes in Utah. Genealogy Projects that have not been turned in should be brought in as soon as possible.

This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Spelling #18 – 20 mins study
Lesson 12.6-P231, 12.3-P225, 12.7-P233, 12.4-P227
