January 23-27th

Dear Parents,

Last week we had 2 BYU students as helpers in our class. We absolutely LOVED having them! They helped us learn so much and even played with us! We are having such a great year!

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be talking about point of view again. We will identify who is telling a story or writing a text and identify what they think about the story or topic they are telling about. Our spelling is list #17 with changing the y at the end of a word to an i before adding an ending. Students should be spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will be finishing our Measurement Unit. We will be learning how to convert measurements of mass and capacity in the customary and metric systems. We will do word problems and table conversions and then review for our test. Our test will be next Monday, so please make sure to study with your student from their pre-test they will bring home on Friday. For Target Time we will be reviewing equivalent fractions.

Writing: This week we will finish our imagination story. We will finish our rough draft, edit and revise it, and then type our story into Google Docs. This is a fun activity to give our minds a break from all the non-fiction essays we have been writing! Please make sure that if your student has not finished their author report, that they get that done and turned in by Friday, otherwise that will be 300 points that will stay 0s on their grade.

Science: Our fossils unit was short and sweet. This week we will review what we have learned this unit. We will play a jeopardy game which is a great study tool. Here is the link to the game if your student wants to play at home: https://www.jeopardy.rocks/fossilsareeasy
The students will also take a practice test in class this week. The science unit test will be on Tuesday, January 31st.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be presenting our Genealogy Projects. My class’s projects are due on Tuesday. This is not meant to be an intense writing project, but instead is meant for students to learn how their family came to Utah. This is usually a very fun project for students because they are learning and sharing about themselves!

This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Spelling #17 – 20 mins study
Lesson 12.8-P235, 12.9-P237, 12.1-P221, 12.2-P223
Genealogy Project – Due Tuesday
*Math, reading, and spelling are due on Friday

Thanks!
Mrs. Wheatley
