November 28th -December 2nd
Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! This is going
to be a great week where students can show me how much they have improved with
their math word problems, opinion writing, and with memorizing their counties.
I’m so excited to see how they all do!
Here is what we are doing in class this week:
Reading: This week we will be focusing on the point of view
of the author in Literature. We will talk about who is telling the story, a
first person or third person, as well as their perspective on the events in the
story. Our spelling is list #11 with r-controlled vowels. Students should be
spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should also be reading
20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.
Math: This week we will be finishing our Word Problems Unit.
We will review how to do multiple step problems and review all the different
kinds of word problems we have talked about. We will be taking our test on
Thursday, so students should be bringing home their pretest as a study guide on
Wednesday. In Target Time we will continue reviewing long division.
Writing: This week we are continuing our opinion writing by
writing about if we think white lies are ok to tell or if we should never tell
lies. This is due on Friday December 2nd.
Students will still be receiving guidance from me as they write, but this essay
will mostly be on their own. We will focus on developing good reasons and
details using an article to help us. Students will type this and put it into myaccess.com for a score.
They should know how to do this. They have their username and password glued
into their planner.
Science: This week we will learn and review the different
kinds of sedimentary rocks. We will also focus on rock vocabulary words by playing
BINGO. We will continue to work on understanding the 3 main types of rocks:
metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary.
Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be taking
our first counties test on Thursday and Friday. Again, students are welcome to
use the study guides/answer keys on my blog to help them study: http://mrswheatleysfourthgrade.blogspot.com/2016/11/county-study-guides.html.
We will also continue to work on our Recreation Project in class. We will be
presenting these to the class next week.
This week’s homework:

understanding both, doing well on both, and making huge improvements from where
we started from! Also, I would like to do book orders from Scholastic this
month. I have 1 student that has ordered a book, but I need more to make a full
order. If you are interested it getting books this month through book orders,
please look for the fliers coming home this week in white envelopes. There are
instructions on the white envelope for how to order books online or you can
send your student with the order form and a check to me. I want to order books

Spelling Lists #9
Here are the links to this week's spelling words. There are 3 different lists for students, according to their needs. The list your child brings home each week should say at the bottom the name of the list. You can also access the words on these links as well as games for students to study with.
November 7-11th
Dear Parents,
I’m so proud of how students have been picking up
multiplication! The class did excellent on our multiplication test a little
while ago, and for the past week during Target Time, they have been doing even
better at it! Also, long division is coming along really well!
Here is what we are doing in class this week:
Reading: This week we will be continuing to work identifying
main ideas and writing summaries of non-fiction texts. Our spelling is list #9
with r-controlled vowels. Students should be spending 20 minutes studying their
words this week. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out
their reading logs.
Math: This week we will be finishing long division. We will
review and do lots of practice on the algorithm in class and we will take our
test on Thursday. Wednesday, students should bring home their pre-test as a
study guide. Please go over this with your student to make sure they know how
to do long division before our test! In Target Time we will be continuing double
digit and 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication. Their homework will be reviewing
division this week.
Writing: This week we are continuing our opinion writing. We
will finish our Ben Franklin writing together and we will revise and type our
essays. We will be putting our opinion essays in an online grading program
called My Access. Students this week will learn how to do this and will be able
to instantly see how they did on their essay.
Science: To start our rock unit off, we will be comparing
and contrasting weathering and erosion. We will learn an erosion dance and a
saying to help differentiate between the two. We will also watch a video that
explains erosion more in depth. The students overall did well on their science
weather tests. They will have an opportunity to do a make-up assignment at home
to add points onto their score. This assignment is due by Friday, November
11th. These makeup points will only be available to those who got below a 90%
on their science test.
Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be
talking about how humans change their environment. We will also pretend to
develop a city in the middle of nowhere and figure out what we would need to do
to the environment to build the city. We will also study our counties in class.
Students should also be practicing memorizing their counties at home.
This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Spelling #9– 20 minutes of study and list signed by parent
Lesson 4.2-P71, 4.4-P75, 4.6- P79, 4.9-P85
Study Counties and County Seats
*Math, reading, and spelling are due on Friday
