September 8-11th

This week in reading we are going to be focusing on making inferences in texts. Inferences are where we take what we already know and clues we get from the text and put them together to understand what is going on. Our spelling this week is Sort 3. It is another sort teaching students how to spell words and add -ing to them. Again, students need to do points for the week. Since it is a short week, 15 points for this spelling list is enough. A note with spelling: I have had multiple students coloring their spelling sorts at home. I have explained to them again that this is what we do in class, NOT at home! Coloring the sorts is a class activity we do, not a homework activity they can get points for. Students are welcome to color their words at home to help them learn which words are similar, but they will not receive points for this.

This week in writing we are finishing our Personal Narratives. These are due on Friday. If students have not yet finished their rough drafts, they should be bringing them home now to finish. We will focus on revising, editing, and publishing our stories. We will have the Chromebooks on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to type our stories. If students do not have their stories completely revised, edited, and typed on the computer by the end of class on Thursday, students need to finish this at home. I will put a copy of the Publishing Checklist I have students use to revise and edit their work on my blog incase students need to use it at home. I will also include the rubric I will use to grade student's stories. Students will be typing them on their Google Drive using their school email. If students need to work on typing at home, they just need to log in to their school email from gmail and go to their Google drive.

This week in math we are starting our next unit. We are going to be learning about factors, multiples, and rules of divisibility. We will also start doing our timed multiplication tests. Students need to be able to do 20 problems of each fact 2-12. We will be trying to pass these facts for our ice cream party in December. If your student does not have all of these facts memorized, please take time to practice them with your student. They should have flash cards that they made in class to help them study.

This week in social studies we will continue learning about geography. We will specifically begin talking about the different landforms we have in Utah.

A couple of last things: don't forget about book orders. Last week we sent home forms for our book orders. You can either send them in to me with a check or you can easily order books online at scholastic.com/reading club with our class code: DH29Z. Next, picture day is this Friday. We will be sending home forms tomorrow if you want to order pictures. Also, our Cougar Crawl is coming up next week. Students will be bringing home information about this fundraiser this week so they can collect donations for our school. Finally, if you have signed up to volunteer in our class, please begin coming this week. We are so excited and grateful to have you come and help out in class each week!
