This week in writing we will be finishing our How To's. We will draft, edit, and revise our papers before rewriting them. I will give students the option to handwrite their final draft or to type their final draft. We will not be reading these in class but instead will be putting them together into a book that each student will be able to read sometime during the year. I will give students through Friday to work on this in class. They will turn their paper in on Friday so I can put them all in a book. Next week we will move on to another writing assignment.
This week in math we are going to start learning how to multiply large numbers. We will start learning how to multiply a 1 digit number by a number in the tens, hundreds, and in the thousands. For example, we will do 8 x 30, 8, 300, and 8 x 3,000. We will also learn that we can break down numbers to multiply. For example, 8 x 3,594 is really 4 problems: 8 x 4, 8 x 90, 8 x 500, and 8 x 3,000.
This week in social studies we will be discussing the history of Utah's landforms. We will talk about what Utah's land has looked like in the past, how it changed, and what forces have changed Utah's land to create the landforms we currently have. Also, students will be expected to begin work on their first social studies homework project. Students will be doing a report on a county. In class they picked a county to do their report on. Students will be expected to find the required information about their county and display the info on a poster board. If students cannot get their own poster board, they can just let me know and I can get one for them. Students have an orange sheet explaining the project and what information is required and I will post that on my blog as well. Students also should have ripped out a notes page from their social studies book in class to help them fill out and find the info they need. My class's reports are due on October 8th and Mrs. Ditto's class's reports are due on October 9th. Students should bring their posters to class on those days to present them to the class. These two websites are great resources for information on all counties. Feel free to use these and any other sources you find!
