Jan 12-16th

This week in reading we will be reviewing how to do summaries of non-fiction texts. In these summaries, we need to make sure we write down the main idea from each section of the text. We will be starting our DRA testing. This is where I get a chance to see how students have progressed in their reading so far this year. We will not have spelling this week, instead for the next 5 weeks we will be doing essays to prepare for our writing test in February. This first essay will be due on January 23rd. After that, each essay will be due the Friday it is assigned, like the spelling homework usually is due. I am giving students 2 weeks for the first essay just to help them understand at first how to do this homework. This first essay is for students to write their opinion on whether ALL field trips should be educational or not. They have an article with instructions on the back of it, as well as a yellow checklist that should be used for all of their homework essays. If your student looses these, I will post copies of them on my blog.

This week in writing we are going to finish writing our essay on if white lies are ok to tell or if all lies are bad. Then we will read another article and discuss whether or not Junk Food is ok. We are focusing on making our essays really good and add lots of details in it. We also want to learn how to edit and revise on the computer so we can do that when we take our test.

This week in math we are starting our measurement unit. First we will be talking about time. We will be converting units of time and then finding elapsed time. We will learn measurement benchmarks and relative sizes of things. We will also start learning the customary units of length such as inches, feet, yards, and miles this week.

This week in social studies we are continuing to learn about different people who came to Utah. We will be reading about them and charting their routes on a map. We will also learn about different peoples' points of view
