October 31-November 4th

Dear Parents,

I am so proud of our class! I was feeling sick last week and lost my voice, and everyone was so caring and kind! They were so good for barely being able to hear me! Everyone is so great! Also, we had so much fun at our Halloween Party! I hope everyone has a great and safe Halloween! Just so you know, I will not let students eat any of their Halloween candy in class. If they want to bring any in their lunch, that is fine, but they should only be eating it at lunchtime, Lastly, the first term is already coming to an end quickly. Please make sure that your student turns in all of their missing assignments by Friday, November 4th.

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be focusing on main idea and summaries again. We will read non-fiction texts and practice identifying the main ideas of them as well as summarizing them. Our spelling is list #8 with 3 letter blends. Students should be spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will be going into long division. We will learn how to break division problems up and will also learn the algorithm for long division. This tends to be really hard for students to learn, so please work with your students at home as they learn this! In Target Time we will be reviewing double digit and 4 digit by 1 digit multiplication. Their homework will be reviewing multiplication as well.

Writing: This week we are starting our opinion writing. We talk about opinions on topics and discuss how to use evidence and reasons to back up your opinion. We will begin writing an opinion paper on Benjamin Franklin and his inventions.

Science: The science test is Thursday! The students have taken a practice test in class. Also, I sent home cloud graphic organizers which will be a great study tool. The test will focus on weather and will include: weather tools, cloud types, and looking at graphs and tables and being able to explain the weather. At the beginning of next week, will start our new unit which is about the rock cycle.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be making maps diagraming how we get to school. We will also talk about health and safety issues that we face in Utah. Lastly, we will study our counties. We will be taking our counties test in December. Students should begin studying these counties at home. They should know where each county is and what its county seat is. They should be bringing home a pink study guide to help them.

This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Spelling #8 – 20 mins of study and list signed by parent
Lesson 3.4-P57, 3.5-P59, 3.6-P61
Study Counties and County Seats
*Math, reading, and spelling are due on Friday

** All missing assignments are due this Friday November 4th!

Thanks!
Mrs. Wheatley
