Genealogy Project

Genealogy Project

In class we talked about how different groups of people got to Utah. Now, we want to know how you got to Utah! Did you have great-great-great grandparents who emigrated here from Europe? Did your grandparents move to Utah from another state? Were your parents the first in your family to move to Utah? Has your entire family lived in Orem forever? Your assignment is to research by talking to family members to find out how you and your family got to Utah. You will write at least 3 paragraphs, at least 5 sentences each, explaining how you and your family came to Utah. Use the following questions to help guide your paper.
1.   Who was the first in your family to come to Utah?
2.   Where were they before they were in Utah?
3.   Why did they come to Utah?
4.   How did they get to Utah?
5.   What challenges did they face by coming to Utah?
6.   Tell a story about someone in your family who faced challenges.
7.   How has your family coming to Utah affected you and your life?
8.   Use the map to chart the route your family took to Utah.

January 9-13

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone has been surviving this cold weather! It’s been crazy! We’ve been trying to survive having inside recess and not being able to go outside and run around. Hopefully we will get some outside recess this week! Please make sure your student is dressed warmly when they come to school, especially if we have outside recess!

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be doing a lot of testing. Students will take their next Unit Assessment on Wednesday. We will review for this on Tuesday and go over the test on Thursday. We will also start our next DRA tests. We will review summaries on Monday and then start our DRA testing. Their will be no spelling homework this week, instead we will do an independent Opinion Writing Essay. Students will receive passages, instructions, and the following prompt: Should chocolate milk be banned from your school? They will do a pre-write and then type their essay into Google Docs. They will need to revise and edit it on the computer and then put it into My Access. We did the same thing before Christmas with our Jacob Riis essays. They will have time in class to work on this when they are not working on a test. They should spend time at home working on it as well to make sure they can finish by Friday. It is due at the end of reading time on Friday. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will be finishing our Equivalent Fractions Unit. We will review on Monday and take our test on Tuesday. Please watch for their pre-test to come home as a study guide. Then we will start our measurement unit with converting measurements of time and finding elapsed time.

Writing: This week we will finish our Author Report. Those who are finished with their written report and poster will present when they are ready. All students need to be ready to present by Friday at the latest, that is when the report is due. Instructions for this are on my blog if students have lost their information page.

Science: We will learn about mineral replacement fossils as well as preserved fossils this week. The students have been filling out a graphic organizer on the types of fossils and we will finish that up this week. We will also continue to work on the fossils song.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be talking about groups of people who have come to Utah. We will start by introducing our Genealogy Project. Students will receive an instruction page telling them to answer specific questions about the first member of their family to come to Utah. My class’s projects are due on January 24th and Mrs. Ditto’s class’s projects are due January 25th. After this, we will discuss several cultural groups that have come to Utah and their points of view.

This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Opinion Writing Essay: pre-write, typed and shared in Google Docs, and in My Access
Lesson 6.1-P113, 6.2-P115, 6.4-P119, 6.5-P121
*Math, reading, and writing are due on Friday

Thanks!
Mrs. Wheatley

Spelling List #15

Here are the links to this week's spelling words. There are 3 different lists for students, according to their needs. The list your child brings home each week should say at the bottom the name of the list. You can also access the words on these links as well as games for students to study with.

January 3-6th

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas Break! Thank you all for your generous and kind gifts, cards, and warm wishes! I feel so grateful to have you parents and to have your students in my class this year! I can’t believe it is already January! This year has gone by so quickly!

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be talking about point of view again, specifically in articles that are persuasive. We will also start reviewing for the DRA. We will review summaries, fluently reading, and we will be reviewing our goals we made after the last DRA. We will start DRA testing next week. Our spelling is list #15 with compound words. Students should be spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.

Math: This week we will be continuing our Equivalent Fractions Unit. We will focus on comparing fractions and ordering fractions by finding equivalent fractions. Our test on this will be next week. In Target Time we will review multi-step word problems.

Writing: This week we are going back to our Author Report. Students should finish typing their written report this week. Then we will start working on our posters. Students should bring a poster to school ASAP. If they cannot get one, I am more than happy to get one for them, they just won’t be able to pick their color! Students have a sheet with instructions for what they need on their poster. I will also post this on my blog in case students loose it. Basically, students will make a flip book and we will put the information from their written report in it. We will put this on the poster. Then students will need pictures of interesting facts, places related to the author, and a picture of the author on the poster. These will be printed off and glued to the poster with labels. We want to make sure that the posters turn out nice, so students will NOT write directly on the poster. Next week we will start presenting our reports. The Author Report is due on Friday January 13th, so students should be finished with their written report and poster by then and ready to present by or before then.

Science: Our rock unit is now over and we will go over the rock tests this week. Our next unit is all about fossils. We will start by discussing what the class already knows about fossils and what they hope to learn. Specifically, we will start learning about impression fossils. We will also start learning a fossil song.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be talking about us! We will discuss things about us that are similar and different. We will also discuss where our ancestors came from. This will lead us to talking about the different people and cultural groups that have come to Utah. We will hopefully also be able to finish and grade our County Tests from before the break!

This week’s homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Spelling #15– 20 minutes of study and list signed by parent
Lesson 7.4-P139, 7.5-P141, 7.6-P143
*Math, reading, and spelling are due on Friday

Thanks!
Mrs. Wheatley
