October 17-19th

Dear Parents,

I am so glad that I got to meet with you all last week! I love each of your students and you parents are just as wonderful as them! I hope everyone has a fabulous Fall Break this week!

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be reading folktales and focusing on theme. We will have spelling words with prefixes. Since it is a short week, students will only have to study their words for 10 minutes this week, and the signed list will be due on Wednesday. For their reading log, students should have 3 days worth of 20 minutes, for 60 minutes total. This they will also turn in on Wednesday.

Math: This week we will be finishing our Multiplication unit. We will be reviewing different ways to solve 2 digit by 2 digit problems and we will take our test on Wednesday. Please help to make sure that your students have their multiplication facts memorized and that they know how to do at least one method to solve large multiplication problems! Their homework for this week will just be to study their multiplication facts for 40 minutes. This should really help them for the test on Wednesday. In Target Time we will be reviewing factors and multiples this week.

Writing: This week we will be talking about poetry. We are going to learn about and write Acrostic, Haiku, Limerick, and Cinquain poems. Next week when we finish, we will put our poems in a class poem book.

Science: We will talk about rainstorms vs. thunderstorms and discuss what is similar and what is different about the two. We will also talk about the different factors that produce storms and what makes up fair weather. We will learn about temperature, cloud cover, and wind speed.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be talking about where people live and population concentrations. We will also talk about industry and will begin creating our own businesses.

This week’s homework:

Read 20 mins for 3 days and fill out a reading log

Spelling #6 – 20 mins of study and list signed by parent

40 minutes multiplication facts

Science Vocabulary Words

Students should study the meanings of these words this week for 20 minutes.

1. condensation: water vapor that cools and changes back into a liquid
2. evaporation: the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas (vapor)
3. precipitation: any form of water that falls from clouds onto Earth's surface
4. vapor: liquid in the air in the form of a gas
5. air pressure: the weight of air on Earth's surface
6. cirrus: thin, wispy clouds
7. cumulus: thick, puffy clouds
8. stratus: layered clouds that produce drizzle
9. cumulonimbus: big, stormy clouds that produce lots of rain
10. meteorologist: a scientist who studies weather
11. barometer: an instrument that measures air pressure
12. thermometer: devise used to measure temperature
13. rain gauge: a container set outside to measure the amount of precipitation
14. weather vane: a devise used to find wind direction
15. anemometer: a devise used to measure wind speed

October 10-14th

Dear Parents,

I am so excited to meet with all of you this week! If you haven’t signed up for a time for parent teacher conferences yet, please email me and we can set up a time or call the office and they can help you set up a time. Please make sure to bring your student with you so we can celebrate their successes so far this year and make some goals!

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be having a review and assessing week. On Monday we took a reading/language test going over many things that we have learned this year. Students will also be doing a quick fluency assessment with me to see how they have progressed in reading out loud. We will also be reviewing science vocabulary this week. Instead of spelling words, students will receive a vocabulary list instead of a spelling list this week and will take a vocabulary test instead of the spelling test. The same rules for homework apply; students should study 20 minutes, get their list signed by you, and turn it in on Friday. This week though, students should study the meanings of the words, not the spellings.

Math: This week we will be learning how to multiply big numbers. We will learn how to multiply 4 digits by 1 digit, and 2 digit by 2 digit numbers. This can be really hard for students but we will go over multiple strategies so that students can use the one they find easiest. In Target Time on Thursday and Friday we will be going over the Factors and Multiples test all together since it was really a struggle for us.

Writing: This week we are writing an explanatory essay explaining how candy has changed through time. This will be done just like the example we did altogether in class last week, but this time students will do it by their selves and it will be graded. This will be due on Monday, October 17^th, and we will work on it all week in class. This will need to be typed and shared with me just like our personal narrative.

Science: We will talk about weather extremes that have occurred in Utah this week. The students will be surprised to learn about how much snow Utah has received in just one day as well as how hot the temperature has been. We will play weather BINGO to review some of our vocabulary words. Later on this week we will talk about air pressure and how it relates to storms. We will also talk about what partly cloudy and mostly cloudy mean.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be presenting our County Reports. My class’s reports are due on Tuesday October 11^th , and we will spend Tuesday and Thursday presenting our posters. For Mrs. Ditto’s class, the reports are due on Wednesday, October 12^th and we will present on Wednesday and on Friday.

October 3-7th

Dear Parents,

We were so happy last week when we got our whole class party! We played games, shared treats, and just relaxed! We’ve already started earning our next party, but this time we need to get points to guess a phrase, kind of like hangman. Wish us luck with this! Also, today we got extra recess from the PTA because 4^th grade was the winner of the last box top contest. Great job everyone! Let’s keep this up and keep bringing in those box tops!

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be reading texts about building businesses and we will focus on finding main ideas and key details. Our spelling words are list #5 and all have the long 0 sound. Students should still be noticing the different patterns of how to spelling this sound as they study. They need to study at least 20 minutes and bring back their list filled out and signed. They should also be filling out a reading log they get on Friday and read 20 minutes each day for this. Both of these are due on Friday.

Math: This week in math we will be studying multiplication. Students will have a test on their multiplication facts that is not timed, but is just checking to see what facts students know and which ones they can’t figure out. Then we will begin to multiply larger numbers. We will learn many different strategies. I do not care which strategy students use to find answers on tests or homework, just that they have at lease 1 strategy that they can correctly use.

Writing: This week we will be reading a couple articles on the history of rollercoasters. We will be writing all together an explanation of how rollercoasters have changed through time. This is preparing students for next week when we will read articles together, but they will need to write their own explanation to be turned in for a grade. This week we are doing it all together so students really know how to do this.

Science: We have a dressed up “meteorologist” coming this week to talk about weather with us. It should be a lot of fun. We will also learn about what the term freezing means as well as how the wind is a factor in weather.

Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be learning about climate and natural resources. We will first learn what climate is and about the different climates around the world. Then we will learn about the different climates in Utah. We will also learn about different natural resources in the world, followed by the different natural resources we have in Utah. Don’t forget about County Reports! They are due on October 11^th and October 12^th. If your student has forgotten what their county is they can ask me during class.
