September 6-9th

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great long weekend! It was so nice to get to see most of you at Back to School Night last week. If you weren't able to come, look for handouts with all the info we went over coming home in weekly envelopes this week.

Here is what we are doing in class this week:

Reading: This week we will be reading a couple of fairy tales and discussing characters, settings, and events as well as writing summaries of the stories. Students will also receive their first spelling list. There are 3 different spelling lists according to student's needs. Students will either be on the Sharks, Tigers, or Frogs list. Students should bring home their list and spend at least 20 minutes studying their words each week. Parents should sign off on the bottom with how many minutes their student spent studying and they will turn it in on Friday. A list of suggested activities to study will be sent home with their first spelling list. Students are welcome to do any activity that helps them study their words. Students should also be filling out a reading log that starts on Fridays, and goes through the next Thursday. This way students are able to turn the reading long in on Fridays.

Math: This week we are continuing our Place Value Unit. We will review adding and subtracting with large numbers and we will do some word problems. This week we will begin tearing out pages in our math book for homework. Students will have 3 pages this week, since there is no school on Monday. Students should do the ENTIRE front page and on the back they only need to do the FIRST 2 problems. They are due on Friday.

Writing: This week in writing we will be starting our rough draft of our Personal Narrative. The rough draft should be finished by next Monday, September 12th. We will learn how to put conversations in our stories and use precise words to describe details.

Science: In science this week students will continue to learn about the water cycle. They will read a book about the water cycle, do a crossword puzzle, continue learning the water cycle song, and write a "water cycle journey" paper about the life of water as it goes through the water cycle.

Social Studies: This week we will be talking about geography. We will be learning about different landforms and different places. We will also focus specifically on the geography of Utah.

This week's homework:
Read 20 mins each day and fill out a pink reading log
Spelling list #1 - 20 mins of study and list signed by parent
Lesson 1.1-P3, 1.2-P5, 1.3-P7
*All homework is due on Friday

Thanks!
Mrs. Wheatley
