January 4-8th

This week in reading we are going to do some more reviewing. We will be reviewing and prepping for the DRA, reading assessment. We will review how to write summaries and answer comprehension questions. Target Time this week will also be preparing for the DRA. We will focus on comprehension and understanding what happened in a story. Our spelling this week will be Sort 33. This will be the last week for a while that we will be doing spelling homework. We will also be teaching/practicing how to do our Persuasive Writing Homework that we will begin next week. This will basically be having students write an essay each week answering a question, using a given article. Students will learn the details this week and I will email/post the details next week with their first assignment.

This week in writing we will be continuing our Persuasive/Opinion Unit. We will be learning how to pull ideas and reasons from an article. We will form our own opinions on the topic in the articles and will write essays using 3 reasons we agree with from the article. This will be in preparation for the Sage Writing Test that students will take later this year. Our Persuasive Writing homework next week will follow along with this.

This week in math we will be learning how to compare and order fractions. We will also be reviewing equivalent fractions. Our test on this unit will be next Monday, so students will bring home their pre-test to use as a study guide on Friday.

This week in social studies we are going to be discussing ourselves. We will learn about each other and talk about where our families come from. Students will be assigned a genealogy project where they will learn about someone in their family who has come to Utah. They will be given the instructions for this project in class this week and I will post them on my blog in case they get lost!

Lastly, over the break we got a donation on Donors Choose towards our next classroom Chromebook. We are now 1/5 of the way to our 6th Chromebook! If you are willing and able to donate towards our class getting another Chromebook that would be awesome! The kids LOVE working on them! We use them in every subject, including reading, writing, math, and social studies.
