March 21-25th
This week in reading we are going to be doing a lot of reviewing and practicing. We will be reading non-fiction and practicing comprehension questions from the passage. We will also practice reading a passage and writing about it. We will review taking notes from a non-fiction text to answer a question, and then writing 1-3 paragraphs to explain our answer to the question. Our spelling words this week are Sort 52 with words ending in -ness, -ful, and -less. Students should do 20 points and turn the work in on Friday. Students should also complete their reading log to turn in on Monday.
This week in writing we are reviewing for our Sage Writing Test next week. We will review how to write an explanatory essay and how to write an opinion paper. We will focus on writing main ideas and details, opinion and reasons, and making our papers better. For Target Time this week we will be reviewing as well. We will go over the rubrics they will be graded on and look at examples of good essays and poor essays.
This week in math we will continue our unit with decimals. We will focus on finding the decimals and fractions for money amounts, adding fractions in the tenths and hundreths together, and adding money and decimals.
This week in social studies we will learn about WWII and its effect on Utah. We will also learn about different leaders in Utah's history. Students will do an in-class report on a leader and present it to the class. They will have time in class to research, write, and present on their leader.
Lastly, we are so excited that we were able to get the funding for our new Chromebook! Thank you to all who donated to the project or shared the project with others. We are so grateful for your help! We hope to soon have another project to get a 7th Chromebook for our class!

This week in reading we will be learning how to use information from 2 different texts to show our learning about a subject. We will read texts about fossils and combine what we learned from each of the texts. We will take an assessment on this on Friday. Our spelling this week will be Sort 51 with words ending in -er and -est. Students should do 20 points worth of activities and turn them in on Friday. Students should also be filling out their reading log to turn in on Monday.
This week in writing we will be starting our Animal Research Project. Students will be picking an animal to research and write a report on. We will have the Chromebooks this week and will be getting books from the library to do our research. All research needs to be completed by the end of the week. This will be similar to our Author Report but since we will not make a poster for this project, we will only spend 3 weeks on this project in class.
This week in math we will be starting our next unit on Decimals. We will learning what decimals are, relating them to fractions, drawing pictures of them, and learning about their place value. We will also look at decimals in money. In Target Time we will be reviewing Geometry. Overall students did really well on this test so I am super proud of them! Those who did very well will receive some enrichment and those who didn't pass the test will review the concepts so they can retake the test.
This week in social studies we will learn about industry in Utah. We will also discuss what it was like in Utah during WWI and talk a little bit about the war. Students will also receive their next social studies project. Students will make a Native American Home model. Students either need to make a hogan, a wiki-up, or a tepee. They will receive instructions for this in class at the end of the week. This will be due on April 19th for my class and April 20th for Mrs. Ditto's class.
Last of all, thank you to those of you who have donated to help us get another Chromebook! We only have the rest of this week to finish funding our project. Donations of any size will help our kids. Right now, any contribution you make to our project will be doubled by #BestSchoolDay. Your donation will brighten my students' school year, and you'll get heartfelt thank yous from our class and photos of your gift in action. Here's my classroom request: Continuing to Thrive Through Technology To have your donation matched dollar for dollar, just make a contribution on that project page and donations will be doubled automatically, but only while funding lasts. If you know anyone who is passionate about education, please pass this along. My students and I greatly appreciate your support!

March 8-11th
This week in reading we are going to be focusing on identifying the theme of a text. A theme is the lesson we can learn from a text. We will read a couple stories and some poems and discuss what the theme of them might be. Our spelling this week will be Sort 50 with words ending in y and ly. Since we have a short week students only need to do 15 points this week. Students should turn their reading long in from last week this Tuesday and need to complete their reading log for his week and turn it in on next Monday.
This week in writing we will be finishing our imaginative stories. Students should finish their rough draft, complete their revising and editing checklist, and re-write their story in class. It can either be handwritten or typed. The checklist and rubric for this story are up on my blog. his is due on Friday March 11th. If they are not completely finished by Thursday in class, they should complete this at home that night.
This week in math we will be finishing our Geometry Unit. We will review how to join and separate angles to find their measurements and will work on finding unknown angles in problems. We will take our Geometry test on Friday and students will bring home their pre-test as a study guide on Thursday. Please help your student study for this test! In Target Time we will continue to go over Mixed Numbers. Students who did not pass the test last time will retake the test in Target Time.
This week in social studies we will be learning about how Utah got it's statehood. We will talk about Utah as a territory and then how Utah became a state. We will also discuss wars that occurred in Utah with the Native Americans.
Lastly, we are still trying to raise money for another Chromebook for our class. We still need $200 and we have until March 17th to raise the money through Donors Choose. If you can, please help us by donating or share this link with others who would be willing to donate to our classroom or share it on social media! Our class loves being able to use our class Chromebooks in every subject. Link to donate to our project: http://www.donorschoose.org/project/continuing-to-thrive-through-technology/1791332/
