Native American Homes Model Project
Students have received a blue paper with instructions to make a wicki-up, tepee, or hogan. Here are examples/pictures to help guide you as you make these models.
March 16-20th
This week in reading we will be reading 2 texts on a similar topic, and using the information in both to combine what we have learned. We are focusing on texts about fossils in order to review that topic. Our spelling this week in Sort 49. Some of these words will be hard for students. They start with number prefixes like uni-, bi-, and tri-. Make sure that students do all 20 points worth of work and turn them in on Friday.
This week in writing we are finishing our Author Reports. Students will have most of class writing time and some of computer specialty time to work on these. Students have a yellow paper detailing exactly what they need to do. They should have a written report with 8 paragraphs as well as a poster with a flip book we will make in class and pictures that have to do with their author. If your student is not close to done with their report, please encourage them to bring it home to work on it!
This week in math we are introducing decimals. We will learn the place value of tenths and hundredths. We will draw pictures, work with hundredths grids, make number lines, and find equivalent fractions for fractions and their equivalent decimals in the tenths and hundredths. Target Time this week will focus on reviewing factors and multiples. Students who are in groups for Target Time who need a lot of extra practice, will start receiving Target Time homework. If your student comes home with Target Time homework, please help them do these pages so they can learn and practice the concepts we are reviewing.
This week in social studies students are receiving their Native American Homes project. Students will bring home a blue sheet detailing the assignment. Basically, students need to make a hogan, tepee, or wickiup with natural materials that Native Americans would have used to make their homes. For my class, the project is due April 20th. For Miss Goldsborough's class, it is due April 21st. For more information on the houses including pictures, please visit my blog.

March 10-13th
This week in reading we will be talking about theme. We will be reading Sort 53. These words are all homophones. This means that the words sound the same but have different meanings and different spellings. It is very important this week that students understand the meaning for each of the words so they know which homophone is being asked when they spell a word. 20 points are still needed for this week.
This week in writing we are focusing on editing and revising our rough draft. Then we will start work on our posters. If you student could bring in a poster board this week for their author report, that would be wonderful! If not, just have your student let me know and I will be more than happy to get one for them, they just might not get to pick out a color they like! We will look for pictures of our author and pictures relating to our author that we can print out and put on our poster. We will learn how to cite our sources for where we got our pictures as well.
This week in math we are finishing our Geometry unit. We will do some word problems, practice measuring angles, and review all that we have learned in this unit. We will take our test on Friday. In target time this week we will also be focusing on geometry to get students ready for the test on Friday. On Thursday's homework, students will need to use a protractor. If you do not have access to a protractor at home, students are welcome to stay a couple minutes after school to use one of mine or to stay in from recess for a few minutes that day to use mine. Students cannot take my protractors home to do their homework though.

March 2-6th
This week in reading we are talking about different presentations of text. We will look at oral, visual, and audio interpretations of the same text. We will talk about the different things we get or learn from each presentation of the text. We will be doing Sort 50 for spelling with -y, -ly, and -ily words. Students still need to turn in 20 points worth of work for these words on Friday. Lastly, of course, don't let your student forget to do their reading log and turn it in on Monday! These are the easiest 100 points students can get! Let's make sure we work hard this final term to stay on top of our work and not get behind!
This week in writing we are working on our rough drafts for our Author Report. If students have not finished their research, they now need to finish this at home. When we are finished writing all 8 paragraphs of our rough draft, we will edit and revise this paper. The rough draft should be done by this Friday.
This week in math we are learning how to measure angles. We will talk about angles in a circle, learn how to use a protractor and measure angles, and learn how to join and separate angles to make other angles.
This week in social studies we will talk about the other immigrants who came after the Mormon Pioneers that came to Utah. We will also discuss what life was like for them. We will then begin discussing how Utah became a state and the challenges faced with gaining our statehood.
Finally, grades are being sent home tomorrow. Please make sure that your student brings it home and gives it to you so you can see how they finished off the 2nd term!
