Welcome back!

Welcome back to school! I'm so excited to have each of your students in my class this year! The first week of school has gone very well and this second week is going awesome as well! Every week I will be emailing you to tell you what is happening in our classroom. I will also be posting the contents of the  email on my class blog for your reference as well. My class blog is http://mrswheatleysfourthgrade.blogspot.com. You can check here for what is happening in our classroom, our homework, spelling words, etc . . . So, here is what is happening this week!

In reading this week we are reading the book Hundred Dresses and talking about being nice to everyone. We are also starting to talk about Narrative Structure, which is how stories are built or put together. We are talking about what the author's purpose in writing their book is: to entertain, inform, persuade, teach a lesson, or to tell us something. For reading our homework is to read 20 minutes each day. Students should keep track of this on their pink reading log. On it each day, students need to write how long they read, the book they read, how many pages, the date, and 2 sentences about what they read. On Mondays they will turn this in to me and get a new one for that week. This reading log is worth 100 points each week and does not need to be signed by you. Please help your student with this homework by making sure that they do read 20 minutes each day!

In writing this week we are starting our Personal Narratives. These are true stories about us. We are trying to write an exciting, entertaining story and to be good storytellers. We will do this by adding lots of details to our story and trying to "show" not tell so we can create movies in the mind our our readers and listeners. Students have no writing homework this week.

In math this week we are working on multiplication and division facts. We will be talking about what multiplication and division are, understanding them, and practicing our facts. Students homework this week is multiplication worksheets. They only need to do the practice side of the worksheet this week.

In social studies this week we are talking about the world and maps. We are learning about hemispheres, latitude and longitude, the equator and prime meridian, and degrees. We will be looking at maps and drawing our own maps. There is no homework for social studies this week.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. It is usually easiest to contact me through email. My email is cteaford@alpinedistrict.org.
