Dear Parents,
Last week was so fun! We got to write the lines to our class
plays and they have turned out so well! We also did 2 STEAM projects. First, we
were challenged to get our whole body through an index card. If you haven’t
seen that already, you should ask your student to show you how to do it!
Everyone was so creative with this! Also, we learned how dinosaurs are named
with Greek and Latin roots. Then we had to create our own dinosaur and name it
accurately with Greek and Latin roots according to its behaviors and
attributes. It was so interesting and fun to learn about!
Here is what we are doing in class this week:
Reading: This week we will be focusing again on theme. We
will read historical fiction texts and compare and contrast themes from the
texts. Our homework is spelling list #26 with the en sound at the end. Students
should still be spending 20 minutes studying their words this week. They should
also be reading 20 minutes a night and filling out their reading logs.
Math: This week we will be doing our last math unit. We will
learn how to multiply fractions by a whole number. We will learn how to model
this, learn tricks to solve them, and do problem solving with them. Our test on
this will be next Monday.
Writing: This week we will be starting a new fun project. We
will be writing a Porquois tale. These are stories about nature that explain
why or how something has come to be. We will be creating little books next week
to put these stories in. This week we will focus on getting the story out in a
pre-write and rough draft.
Science: Now that the environments test is over, the
students will be doing lots of reviewing. The scores for this test will be on
skyward by the end of the week. Students will work on remembering the states of
matter, deserts, some practice questions from every unit this year, and the
rock cycle.
Social Studies: This week in social studies we will be
learning about economy. We will first design a community that has all it needs
to thrive. Then we will learn more vocabulary words that have to do with
economics. We will also focus on understanding profit vs loss in a business. On
Friday, we will be presenting our Native American Homes project. Please make
sure students are done with it and ready to bring it to school to present on
Friday!
